Ambala was given the status of a district in 1847, formed by the merging the jagir estates of hitherto independent chieftains whose territories had lapsed or had been confiscated by the British Indian Government. In its 160 years of existence as a district, Ambala has witnessed many changes in its boundaries. Its boundaries previously extended across tehsils of Ambala, Saphera, Jagadhri, Pipli, Kharar, Mohali, Ropar and Nalagarh. Kalka-cum-Kurari State, Pinjore, Manimajra, Kasauli & Sanawar were also merged into the district at different points of time.
Central library: The computerized Library at ACE is well equipped and constantly expanding. It is housed in a 12,000 square feet facility with a mezzanine floor. Sh. H. K. Das Memorial Reading Room is attached to the library. It is air conditioned and has separate closed cabins for group discussions. The annual budget for library is Rs. 10 lakhs per year which has resulted in a collection of more than 21,000 books in less than 7 years. The college has additional library facilities both in the girls’ and boys’ hostels. The library remains open even after college hours for the convenience of the students.
Hostel: The Hostels at ACE are designed with a capacity of 204 boys and 86 girls residents. Every floor has clean toilets with hot water facility in winters. There are two hostels for boys with 50 triple seated rooms and 54 single seated rooms and two for girls with 20 triple seated rooms and 26 single seated rooms.The mess is within the hostel along with a canteen on campus. There are common rooms for recreation and a play ground along with a gymnasium. Guestrooms are available in the hostel for visitors. On campus first aid and medical care is also available. Provision of more hostel accommodation is on the cards.
