Facilities
Amrita is a thriving campus that has a creative and proficient community of high achievers. Life at Amrita brings surprises and new experiences every day. Amrita University has a students strength of around 18,000 with the student body almost equally divided between boys and girls. Each campus has about thirty percent of the students coming from states outside the location of the campus they are attending. In fact, there are students from nearly every state in India.
The student body also includes NRI and foreign students. Such a diverse student body helps enrich sharing and learning spontaneously. At the same time it creates an awareness of different cultural norms, generates sensitivity to the needs and concerns of others, and focuses on intercultural cooperation.
Learning happens not just in the classroom at Amrita. Extracurricular activities are encouraged with students forming clubs and associations that deal with topics like science, astronomy, environment, literature, music, culture, dance and photography.
Students are encouraged to become members of professional bodies such as the Association of Computer Machinery (ACM), Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), Society for Automotive Engineers (SAE), Computer Society of India (CSI), and Institution of Electronics and Telecommunications Engineers (IETE). Reading and discussing research papers is part of the curriculum not just at the masters and doctoral levels, but at the bachelor-level too.
YOGA AND MEDITATION
Amrita’s curriculum is designed to ensure the holistic development of each student. Students receive mandatory training in yoga and meditation that have manifold benefits. This training is given as college life can be a stressful time for anyone and most students are stressed about something. While having stress in life is normal and often unavoidable, being stressed is something that can be controlled.
Students are taught the Integrated Amrita Meditation Technique (IAM), that is a simple combination of yoga, pranayama and meditation that takes just 20 minutes a day. IAM is a meditation technique for modern days. The technique is a synthesis of traditional, time-tested methods suited for the current mental conditions, time-constraints and needs of modern man.
Meditation is the art of mental mastery. It controls the mind and makes it happy, content and peaceful, regardless of what happens in the external world. It further develops concentration, clarity of perception, improvement in communication, blossoming of skills and talents, relaxation and rejuvenation. These techniques bring together the physical and mental disciplines to achieve peacefulness of body and mind, freeing the mind from agitation and makes it calm, serene and at peace.
RESEARCH AND TEACHING
Amrita University has always given paramount importance to research. As directed by its Chancellor, Amma, the research activities at Amrita are directed towards societal, humanitarian and community development, and relief.
Many centres of excellence have been started in cutting-edge areas like Wireless Networks & Applications, Cyber Security, Computational Engineering & Networking, Virtual Labs, E-learning, Haptics, Educational Technologies, Nanosciences & Molecular Medicine, Biomedical Engineering, Cancer Prevention & Cure, Biostatistics and Environmental Sciences.
Several faculty members too are engaged in research projects that have the potential to help make a positive impact in people’s lives. Funding for these projects is received from international collaborators and Indian Government agencies.
Some of our faculty members with a masters degree are currently enrolled in Amrita as part-time Ph.D. students. The senior faculty provide guidance for their dissertation and when their thesis nears completion, they are even eligible for leave with full pay.
CULTURAL FESTIVALS
Cultural festivals are at the heart of students lives at Amrita University. The cultural festivals of India give a glimpse into the tradition of our country and portray its rich cultural heritage.
Numerous and varied cultural festivals are held in all the campuses that offer a unique way of seeing Indian culture at its best.
Some of the cultural festivals celebrated are the Amritotsavam, Amritakalotsavam and Kalamritam that are conducted at all the campuses each academic year. Students also participate in bhajans and vedic chantings as wholesome education includes the spiritual aspect as well.
SPORTS
Amrita gives importance to sports as it is a healthy body that can house a healthy mind. Sports play an integral part in moulding and refining the character of an individual, Students are encouraged to take part in all indoor and outdoor games. Every campus has an annual sports meet.
There are an array of sport events that provide opportunities in competition and recreation for both the students and faculty. There is never a dull moment on the campus as each moment brings with it new experiences and new opportunities to learn while at the same time building discipline, team spirit, teamwork, co-operation, sportsmanship and tolerance among our students.
CONFERENCES
Students are encouraged to attend conferences and present papers. One such instance was in November 2008, when a team of nine third-year B Tech students from Amritapuri travelled to Malaysia to present their papers at the IEEE Regional Student Conference on Research and Development. One of their papers won the best paper award in the conference. Another one was earlier this year when a student from the School of Business represented India at the European Market Research Conference.
Students also take part in international coding contests such as Microsoft Imagine Cup, Google Prodigy Contest, IBM Great Mind Challenge, Sun Microsystems Code for Freedom and ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC). Our students have won top honours in these contests bringing laurels to the university. In 2008 the Amrita team beat 60,000 other teams to emerge as the runners-up in the IBM Great Mind Challenge competition.
STUDENT CLUBS
With the objective to further the overall development of its students, Amrita encourages and provides opportunities to students to participate in a wide range of extra-curricular, social and community development activities.
Associations like Samskriti (Students Association for Performing Arts & Culture), Saahiti (Literary Association), Amrita Samskrita Saparya, Synergos (the science forum on campus), in addition to various clubs like the Karate club, Robotics club, Photographic club and Astronomy club help bring out the creative talents in students and promote team-spirit.
Some of the other associations like Amrita Sanjeevani or Green Friends provide students a platform to be engaged in humanitarian or environmental-related activities.
AMRITA ROBOTICS CLUB
The Amrita Robotics Club was created with the purpose of developing interest in the field of Robotics among the student community.
As one of the emerging fields in India with great potential, Robotics offers students the opportunity to practice and hone many multi-disciplinary skills. Regular classes on Robotics are offered by experts along with workshops and other resources that help in launching each student’s dream projects.
Information on a variety of events and tech fests in various colleges are shared and regular meetings are conducted to facilitate the sharing of ideas.
AMRITA SAMSKRITA SAPARYA
The aim of this club is to encourage and promote the Sanskrit language among our students and staff. Regarded as the mother of all languages, the study of Sanskrit encompasses an understanding of the aspirations and cultural traditions of our country.
The club organises short-term courses and workshops in Spoken Sanskrit, conducts cultural programs and exhibitions in order to provide a familiarity with the Sanskrit language.
AMRITA SANJEEVANI
Guided by the motto, Pray with your heart and serve with your hands, Amrita Sanjeevani, is a student run seva association of Amritapuri Campus. Amrita Sanjeevani organises youth camps, awareness campaigns and fundraisers for the needy. The association has already sponsored the education of several children through its activities.
Sanjeevani also regularly conducts bhajan sessions, workshops and takes care of an organic garden in the campus. These activities are organised under seven wings namely Vismaya, Sameeksha, Haritamithra, Acharya, Arpan, Maithri and Laya.
GREEN FRIENDS
Green Friends is a “nature club” working with a vision to instil among the youth, love for plants and animals. This helps inculcate respect for oneness with nature and all elements in life.
Members are actively involved in preserving the campus ecosphere and promoting an eco-friendly way of life through creating awareness inside and outside the campus.
An important project of Green Friends is the cultivation and maintenance of a vegetable garden on the campus grounds that see regular and active participation from many students. Seminars and invited talks are also organised.
SAAHITI
The literary association on campus aims to promote literary and artistic talents of students. In addition, a Theatre Society provides a platform for interested students to hone their skills in acting, playwriting and directing. The Writers’ Club and Speakers’ Forum enable students to unleash their potential and creativity in various fields, including public speaking.
Saahiti conducts a number of competitions in writing poetry and essays. Debates are also conducted and prizes awarded to the winners of the competition. One such was a workshop on the “Art of Acting” conducted on January 13, 2010. The famous Cine and Serial Actor, Mr. Rajesh Hebbar was the resource person. In a joint venture with the Department of CIR and Department of English, the Theatre of Excellence, stages scenes from Shakespeares tragedy, “Othello”, on this occasion.
SYNERGOS
As the Science Forum of the campus, Synergos help students develop a scientific temperament and a research-oriented mindset by conducting weekly brainstorming sessions, seminars, quizzes and discussions. The Forum also celebrates events of scientific importance such as National Science Day and Nobel Prize Week.
AMMA OFTEN REMINDS US…
Our Chancellor, Amma, often reminds us, “The beauty and charm of selfless service should not die away from the face of this earth. The world should know that a life of dedication is possible, that a life inspired by love and service to humanity is possible”.
The students of Amrita University strive to serve as loving testimonials to these inspiring words from their Chancellor. In their first year, students from all campuses come to Amritapuri, on rotation, in order to meet Amma. During the following three or four years, they return again several more times, and especially on Amma’s birthday, with large numbers arriving to participate in the celebrations. When Amma visits their cities on her annual tours, these students are at the forefront again, organising and helping.
