Students unrest as no first cutoff on first day:

Admission to the University of Delhi (undergraduate), which is the greatest admission process in the country could not start on its scheduled day as no official first cutoff lists were released. Its really a heart breaking moment for those students who have come along with parents from different corners of the country hoping that they might reserve a seat on the very first day itself, now they have to wait for a day or couple.

This years a record of some 2.75 lakhs of students have registered for the 54,000 seats intake of the university of delhi.

The stand-off between the University Grants Commission (UGC) and Delhi University over the four-year undergraduate programme (FYUP) has resulted in the deferring of the admission process.

The principals of 36 of the 61 colleges under DU met after the university failed to take any official stand on the admission process. DU was asked by the UGC to withdraw its controversial four-year undergraduate programme immediately and ensure that all new admissions are made “only to the three-year undergraduate programme”.

The UGC had also asked DU to inform all the colleges and report compliance of its directive by forenoon today. DU, however, did not get back to UGC nor did it issue any formal guidelines to the colleges under it regarding the admission process.

At the meeting of the Principals’ Association of DU held yesterday evening at SGTB Khalsa College, the principals unanimously resolved that “in view of the recent developments and the seriousness of the situation regarding the conflicting guidelines of University of Delhi and UGC regarding admissions 2014-15, the Principals’ Association has no option but to resolve to defer the process of admissions till unambiguous guidelines are received by the colleges from the competent authority”.
