Scientist has claim to developed a new technology called Li-Fi, light fidelity and is said to be transferring data at the speed of light using visible light communication (VLC).

The technology has also claimed that it could transfer data at speeds of 1 GB per second, 100 times the speed of traditional WiFi. The tech was tested by an Estonian start-up called Velmenni, who are currently trialling it in offices. It is also said that Scientists have achieved speeds in the lab of up to 224 GB per second.

The term Li-Fi was first coined and pioneered by Professor Harald Haas, from the University of Edinburgh in 2011.

"We are doing a few pilot projects within different industries where we can utilise the VLC (visible light communication) technology," Deepak Solanki, CEO of Estonian tech company, Velmenni, told IBTimes UK.

"Currently we have designed a smart lighting solution for an industrial environment where the data communication is done through light. We are also doing a pilot project with a private client where we are setting up a Li-Fi network to access the Internet in their office space.
