  • Jim Morgan And The Seven Sins by Bharat Madan

Blurb: A quest to identify seven deadly sins A mystery behind seven keys that were passed to seven men A deadly race against time to seek atonement On the outskirts of New York City, Jim Morgan, an international bestselling author learns through God that he had committed seven sins in his previous life. Clues lie in the six novels he has written, that would lead him to the mystery. But the novels won't reveal everything to him. With seven days on hand, he must walk in the direction that faith leads him in, to reach the lost chamber of Seven Planets. Unless Morgan understands the secret behind his past life and the sins he committed, his chance to live will be lost forever. The first page that we come across in the book showed a conversation Jim Morgan has with God and that made me think 2 things. (a) He's psychotic and (b) If this turns out to be a spiritual book, I will be cringing the whole time. Because like a genius once said, "You talk to god. You're religious. God talks to you. You're psychotic." But the great thing about fiction is that you get complete freedom of doing whatever you want to do. Well, I am glad that I read a couple other pages and did not just abandon this book. Mainly I just like reading about protagonists who are also writers and Jim Morgan's character seemed like an interesting one. And when the time-travelling aspect came into the mix, I was delighted. That is how it all began. The thrilling mystery ride with lots of suspense, action, unveiling secrets and for us readers, entertainment. Jim Morgan is a popular writer who has written six best sellers and as he works on his seventh book, he needs to figure out a common link between them all. Enters God who gives him an ultimatum. Find what sins he has committed in his past lives within seven days or rot in hell. Typical divine being (Deadline gave it away). This launches an investigation into his past looking for what sins he has committed in his past life that have brought him to this point in life. With God by his side and a nameless assassin after him who is not afraid to kill and hurt other people in order to get to Jim, this book just keeps you on the edge of your seat. I stayed up late reading this because I just had to know what happens next and how it ends. But the thing is, with everything happening so fast (yes it is a fast-paced book), some elements got confusing at times and I had to go back and reread a couple times just to get the story straight in my head. Don’t get me wrong the main plot is simple and well woven; it is the sub-plots leading to it that were a little hard to grasp. I blame that little bit on the writing style. While it worked for the rest of the things like the characters and action-sequences, telling a story requires sort of a different approach. Now on to the seven keys, passed on to seven men that he has to find and then use his imagination to tell the story of his past life. Now who can imagine something better than a writer? It was amazing being in Jim’s head. And most of the time when he was running away from nameless and jumping into another timeline I felt like this book was a mixture of James Bond and Doctor who (Just throw Se7en for the seven sins into the mix). Overall Analysis: Characters: Like I already said, I adored Jim’s character. With his quick thinking and bravery, he made for a strong character. I even liked the side characters like Marshal and Kathryn and dare I say it, even God. Plot: The plot is strong and the story is intriguing enough to keep you hooked till the end. The twists and turns are unpredictable so get ready to be surprised. Writing style: While it could have been improved at some places, mostly the author has done a good job at keeping it simple and yet eloquent. Moreover, you do not need elaborate quotes and stuff in a thriller anyway. You need writing that keeps you biting your nails and that mission was accomplished. Ending: My favourite part. Because I hate it when a book is going really good and the ending disappoints. Fortunately, that wasn’t the case with this book. By the end the only word on my mind was “Dayum!” Because I did not see that coming. My prediction about how the book would end was wrong and I couldn’t be more happy about it. Note to Author: You, sir, have indeed restored my faith in Indian novels. Writing a good mystery/thriller with a complex plot, good characters and executing it this well? Commendable job.
