Micromax launched a low cost tablet PC in the market on Tuesday, the FUNBOOK. Based on the Android 4.0.3 Ice Cream Sandwich operating system, it has a 7-inch multi-touch capacitive touch screen powered by a 1.22GHz Cortex A8 processor. The device has 4GB of onboard memory, expandable via a micro SD card and 512MB of RAM.
The Funbook, priced at INR 6,499, is targeted specially at the education sector. The Funbook comes with a 2,800 mAh battery and sports 3G dongle support via a USB in additional to Wi-Fi Capability and 0.3 megapixel front facing camera. Micromax made the announcement via a live web cast on Facebook.
Let’s have a look at some of the coolest features of Funbook:
1. Internet on the GO!
The Micromax Funbook has been built to excel at helping students to learn or entertaining them after long hours of study. The company has also tied up with Tata Photon+ to bundle EV-Do data card with 1 GB of additional download for two months. The Funbook is planned to be available in more than 50 cities.
2. HD Capable – Entertainment Hub
This tablet is also an entertainment hub. We tried playing some 1080p videos, it played them all smoothly. The sound output (via the built in speaker) is just about decent and it is (as usual) advisable to invest in a good pair of headphones.
3. Inbuilt E-Learning Application
The Funbook will ship with an e-learning app which offers reading material from all the leading educational content brands. The app has 500 courses from class 1 to graduate and post-graduate courses like Engineering, Medical and MBA. Users need to pay just Rs.799 for educational content of a particular class and they could get access to the multimedia content from their partners.
Conclusion – Should you buy it?
The Micromax Funbook's capacitive screen will not dazzle user with its 800x480 pixel resolution. While the device plays 1080p videos, the lower screen resolution means that user cannot enjoy them in their full HD glory, but the video clarity makes watching HD videos more worth the while than other lower resolution videos. The touch is also quite responsive.
The Micromax Funbook tablet may not be Aakash cheap, but it is wallet friendly. It may not be a beauty queen but is pleasing to the eyes. Durability is a factor of time and usage, this is one factor that, as the cliche goes, only time can tell.
