  • CBSE uploads AIEEE 2012 ORS answer-sheet of each student - OMITS 'Right' answers!

The CBSE, for the first time, posted the optical reading sheets (ORS) of students who appeared for the offline All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE). Around 11 lakh students across India were able to view their engineering test answer sheets on Monday, but were unable to verify if their answers were correct.

Since the correct answers were not given along with the ORS, this has drawn flak from the students who claim that such a disclosure is meaningless as they will not be able to ascertain the correctness of answers and calculate their scores.

The CBSE move came after the IITs, in May, placed the ORS on its website for students to evaluate their performance. However, unlike IITs, the CBSE did not post answer keys online, preventing students from evaluating their performance. "In IIT-JEE too, the answer keys were uploaded that helped resolve some goofs. With various coaching centres uploading different 'right' answers, it has caused much confusion among candidates," said Ramesh Narang, Centre Manager, FIIT-JEE, New-Delhi.

    Students left in the lurch

Divankar Sharma, who gave the offline exam, said, "I am still not clear about the right answers." Rashmi Sehgal, who too wrote the offline exam, said, "The board should have given the answers, so that we know about our performance." The answer-sheets have been uploaded to enable students to challenge the board in case any of the answers differ from the one they marked during the offline test.Candidates who appeared for the online examination do not have the option to view their ORS.

    Hesitant CBSE!

Sources pointed out that CBSE is hesitant about disclosing answer-keys even after over a month of examination, because there is fear of getting caught with wrong question answers.

In the past, many errors in the official keys were pointed out by the teachers, parents and other stakeholders in other exams, including in IIT-JEE too. They pointed out that to check the correctness of the answer keys and bring in more transparency to the evaluation system, provisional answer keys should be released first. Then, based on the feedback, the answer keys should be frozen for final evaluation. State Boards of UP, Karnataka, Kerala, have been doing it for the past many years. While West Bengal has recently started such a process.

The scanned images of answer-sheets can be checked on the website and If a candidate wants to challenge the uploaded answer-sheets, he can submit an application at any of the CBSE regional offices or at AIEEE unit at Patparganj, Delhi-92, on or before June 6 till 12 noon, along with the prescribed fees of Rs 500 per recorded response challenged.
