    IT’S NEVER too late to join a B-School. The mint-fresh MBA batchat IIM-Rohtak, the Class of 2014, mirrors this growing realization amongprofessionals outside engineering, economics and commerce the academic streamswhich have traditionally provided talent for B- Schools.

    IIM-Rohtak’s Class of 2014 includes a dentist, scuba diver,fashion designer and aspiring entrepreneurs. This unusual diversity is anindicator of the growing relevance of management education for students outsidethe traditional streams.

    Sonia Chandra, a practicing dentist who is among the127 new students, believes that by attending a Post Graduate Programme inManagement, she would be able to fulfill her aspiration of becoming anentrepreneur. “I intend to open a chain of dental clinics in the long run,” saysChandra. “Enrolling for a programme like this will give me the necessaryexposure to management principles that is required to be able to succeed insuch a venture,” she adds.

    Kshitij lakhera, an engineering graduate and trained scuba diver,also believes that the management programme will set him on his path ofentrepreneurship. “I am yet to come up with a business plan, but I believe thecourse here will provide me with the necessary skills and network to be able todo so,” Lakhera says. “The IIM Rohtak tag will help me in the long run.” Theinstitute organized an induction programme for the Class of 2014 and it wasattended by IIM professors and corporate honchos.

    Shekhar Chaudhuri, Director, IIM- Kolkata, who spoke about the IIMbrand value, explained how it was important for every IIM graduate to enhanceit through individual achievements. Aruna Krishnan, a senior corporate humanresources development executive at Wipro Limited, talked about the importanceof communication skills at the workplace and the importance attached to it bycompanies that visit campuses for hiring students.

    IIM-Rohtak, which became operational in 2010, had 130 students inits inaugural batch that graduated this year. The batch was placed in some ofthe top companies and the average placement salary was `12.22 lakhs per annum.The country’s youngest IIM is going places, and how!
