Indian Government blocks Facebook, You Tube in Kashmir
An order has been issued to the Internet service providers to block Facebook and You Tube in the Kashmir Valley.
The order to impose the ban on the websites was issued by the state Home Department, under the powers bestowed under section 5(2) of the Indian Telegraph Act 1885. There are rumors that GPRS has also been blocked in the valley.
All the major telecom operators like BSNL, Reliance, Aircel, Airtel and Vodafone have blocked these services in the valley. Apart from restrictions on the social networking sites, the telecom companies have also put restrictions on services such as e-mails.
The BlackBerry services were also said to be be jammed.
The widespread ban comes in response to the protests against the anti-Islam video on YouTube.
The order stated, "In the interest of public safety and for maintaining public order, the government directed all licensed Telecom Service Providers and Internet Service Providers to make arrangements to ensure that their subscribers in Jammu and Kashmir should not be able to download or upload the contents (with respect to the video)."
The Anti-Islam video has triggered violence across the globe and the violent protests also led to the killing of the US ambassador in Libya last month.
