Sheila Dikshit inaugurates the new IIIT-Delhi campus
Earlier this week on Monday, Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit inaugurated the new campus of the Indraprastha Institute Of Information Technology (IIIT) in Okhla.
Prior to the new campus, IIIT was functioning temporarily from NSIT (Netaji Subhas Institute of Technology) and the students had to attend the classes at the NSIT campus.
IIIT Delhi was established back in 2008 , with the first batch of Engineers passing out this year from the institue.
At the inauguration ceremony, Sheila Dikshit said that the government hopes to present this institute as one of the best in the country and the government would also support all the research programs that take place at the institute. Dikshit also said that the government would ensure the growth of the institute and it would make sure that the institute never suffers from lack of funds.
The Delhi chief minister also announced that the students from Delhi Government schools who study make it to IIIT Delhi, would get free education at the institute.
Dikshit also announced the construction of a foot over bridge, that would directly connect the IIIT Delhi campus to the Okhla Metro station.
Commenting on the occasion, Sheila Dikshit said, "The government will do its best to make it one of the best institutes in the world to offer the latest knowledge in the field of IT. It has already earned a special recognition as a premier institute.
Our government is keen to develop this institute as the world's best institute in information technology and allied fields by offering highly innovative courses."
At present, the institute consists of 520 students out of which 410 students are from the B.Tech programme and 110 are from the M.Tech programme. Dikshit also said that the government expects to double the number of seats in the next three years.
