  • Marketing re-emerges as a hot favourite at IIM Rohtak summer internships

THE summer internship report of the IIM closest to Delhi IIM Rohtak is finally out and it says that the institute was visited by 53 recruiters in search of emerging talent.

IIM-Rohtak, which is in its third year, has 125 students in its MBA Class of 2014. And they found internships in companies across sectors such as Finance, Marketing, Operations, Consulting, General Management and Human Resources.

The surprise element was the re-emergence of Marketing as a student favourite it caught the fancy of 27 per cent of the total batch. Students were offered internships in diverse areas such as marketing research, services marketing, brand strategy, sales, rural marketing, B2B marketing and advertising. All the candidates who got picked up for internships, incidentally, had an average work experience of 36 months. Recruiters, clearly, are not looking at greenhorns.

Some of the leading companies that came to IIM-Rohtak included Dabur, Tata Motors, 3M, Becton Dickinson, MTS, Berger Paints, Future Brands, Anchor, McCann Erickson, Draft-FCB ULKA, Ashiana Housing, CTI Shipbrokers India, Alstom, and Jindal Steel and Power. The highest stipend offered this summer was INR 1 lakh.

Interestingly, IIM-Rohtak managed to attract a number of companies in the finance sector, despite the prevailing economic slowdown. With recruiters such as Mahindra & Mahindra Finance, NCDEX and i-Ventures Capital, Bank of Baroda and State Bank of India, 26 per cent of the batch (next only to marketing) got placed in internships in econometric modelling, investment banking, corporate finance, trading, retail banking, project finance, risk management, equity research and the treasury.

There placements also saw a surge in the number of aspirants for general management roles. Recruiters such as Majestic Auto and Tata Power offered internship projects related to business expansion.

IIM-Rohtak, which opened in 2010, had 130 students in its inaugural batch that graduated earlier this year. The batch found placements in some of the top companies, their average salary being INR 12.22 lakh per year. Its Class of 2014 has a mix of experienced professionals and newbie graduates from leading institutions such as the IITs, National Institute of Technology, and Birla Institute of Technology and Science.
