Excellence - is it driven from inside or outside?

Rating: 1 votes, 4.00 average.
Each one of us strive to excel in the work we do. Sometimes it requires our managers/ competitors or customers push us to deliver good quality. Is external push necessary for excellence? What happens if it is driven from inside? Following story from internet better explains this scenario.

A German once visited a temple under construction where he saw a sculptor making an idol of God. Suddenly he noticed a similar idol lying nearby.

Surprised, he asked the sculptor, "Do you need two statues of the same idol?"
"No," said the sculptor without looking up, "We need only one, but the first one got damaged at the last stage."

The gentleman examined the idol and found no apparent damage. "Where is the damage?" he asked.
"There is a scratch on the nose of the idol." said the sculptor, still busy with his work.

"Where are you going to install the idol?"

The sculptor replied that it would be installed on a pillar twenty feet high.

"If the idol is that far, who is going to know that there is a scratch on the nose?" the gentleman asked...

The sculptor stopped his work, looked up at the gentleman, smiled and said, "I will know it."
The desire to excel is exclusive of the fact whether someone else appreciates it or not.

"Excellence" is a drive from inside, not outside.
Excellence is not for someone else to notice but for your own satisfaction and efficiency.
So if we have that inner urge / motivation within ourselves, irrespective of external factors we will excel in what we do.So can we say all outstanding performers inherently have this inner urge and not depend on external factors?.

    nice discussion topic @Saumya !
I think the motivational and inspirational values come out from inside your deep analysis about your strenght, your self-control in your managment of all things related to your works ,your company...we also find some changes from looking outside but we shoud extract only moral and valuable abstractions from others good examples of exlellence. we and only we are responsible for all exlence work done by us..its come from our deep thinking about urself..whereever we find our weakness ,our barrier of achieving the limit of excellence we should eliminate them... thats all.

Excellence is an outcome of mixture of inner and outer motives....Let's see how...
Suppose you want2excel in a certain area which requires skills, knowledge, financial aid....may be sometimes you encounter such situations that you get stressed that time your faithful relatives, family members will inspire you....No doubt efforts are to be done by you only to excel...but outside world plays a very string role to achieve your goal i.e. to excel in your field................
