Environment plays a vital role in an overall development of the country. Recognizing the importance of environmental protection and sustainable development, the Ministry of Environment and Forest, Government of India had formulated policies and procedures governing the industrial and other developmental activities to prevent indiscriminate exploitation of natural resources and to promote integration of environmental concern in developmental projects. The Ministry of Environment & Forest has made environmental clearance (EC) for certain developmental projects mandatory through its notification issued on 14th September 2006 and as amended on 1st December 2009. The categorization of the developmental projects / activities is specified in the EIA Notification 2006 and its amendment.
