All-India Council for Tech-nical Education chairman S.S. Mantha has clarified that all maritime graduate and higher courses should have the twin approval of AICTE and Director-General of Shipping.

Without them, students would not qualify for higher studies and jobs, he told DC over phone. The clarification was sought in the light of claims that DG-Shipping approval alone was necessary for B.Tech, MBA and other marine courses.

AICTE member-secretary Kuncheria P. Isaac said: “But courses directly run by universities have ex-emptions, granted by SC in Bharatidasan case.

Howe-ver, universities do not affiliate technical colleges or courses without AICTE approval.” The same rule applied to Maritime.

AI-CTE was lenient in the case of certificate courses as opposed to diploma, degree and PG courses, he said.
