Smile Foundation, A national level development organization focusing on children, youth and girl children across 25 states of India join hands with IIT Madras under its annual fest “SAARANG” to campaign against child labour through better nutrition that leads to better literacy .

Soham Chokshi, Head of Public Relations ,Saarang 2013, quoted ‘We, at Saarang, believe that preventing malnutrition has emerged as one of the most critical challenges to India’s development in recent times, and under-nutrition led literacy problems remains a silent emergency in our country. Addressing this issue would not only improve nutrition levels but also literacy levels in our country. We are proud to associate with Smile Foundation in our attempt at addressing this social menace through our 'Nutrition for Better Literacy' campaign’

To provide the proper nourishment and nutrition to the underprivileged kids of Smile Foundation the 100 socially conscious restaurants of Chennai will participate in this campaign. As people from the food industry, it is heartening to learn that still a lot of kids are out of school only to earn a meal per day.The involvement of these restaurants will also encourage its customers to dine at such places more often so that they can contribute more towards the society while enjoying a delicious meal at their favourite restaurant.

Mal-nutrition is one of the biggest issues faced by our society.Close to 13.5 million underprivileged children in India are out of school and into child labour in order to earn a single meal a day and a nutritious meal every day can be the solution to curb child labour and incentivize children not to miss school. The Campaign Nutrition For Better Literacy kick starts from 14th November 2012 to 14th January 2013 dedicated to celebrate and spread more smiles amongst the less privileged kids to whom a meal a day is a luxury. This campaign primarily focuses on improving the quality of nutrition of the underprivileged children.
Students of IIT Madras would volunteer to help raise the resources for the campaign by approaching socially conscious 100 restaurants of Chennai. Through this initiative we aim at spreading more smiles by feeding more than 200 children through this campaignSaarang and Smile Foundation strongly believes that good nutrition leads to better literacy.

Smita Kalappa, National Director-Child For Child, Smile Foundation, Bangalore, quoted “We hope to make this event successful by feeding more underprivileged children with nutritious food. Smile Foundation stronglybelieves that good nutrition leads to better literacy. A nutritious meal is an incentive not to miss school for these children and we all will agree that a healthy mind resides in a healthy body. We are thankful to all participating restaurants and supports for believing in the event”

Proper nutrition means improvement in health, immunity to disease, concentration in study, attendance and retention in school. Lack of it has consequences in mortality, productivity, economic growth and chance to come out of poverty. This campaign will culminate at IIT Madras on 13th January,2012.
