The time-varying currents and voltages resulting from the sudden application of sources, usually due to switching, are called transients. The Transient Response is the way the circuit responds to energies stored in storage elements, such as capacitors and inductors. If an inductor has energy stored within it, then that energy can be dissipated or absorbed by a resistor.
