i am a 3rd year civil enginnering student in chennai.
iam interested in doing masters.
my close ones tell me to take structural as my specifiaction.but i am more interested in doing transportation or tunneling or offshore or some thing interesting. is my approch correct and do i have scope of happy/bright future with these specifications.

there are few specific things which we always take into account and leave rest to consultancy firms , mainly foreign firms .so if you got this thing , you dont have good scope of transportation or tunneling atlest in india , structure has got scope in india , soil field is another which has got scope , so keep in mind indian scenario , those specializations are definately good for study but not for futher jobs , but if you intend to do phd after masters and enter into teaching field then it is good else not.i hope you got the pointOriginally Posted by ramsaravana

hello , sorry for late reply , fell off the stairs , so was not online these days
regarding civil engg jobs , i can categorise them in 6 categories from top best to lower down the order
1st option is civil services / indian forestry services but if you are interested , currently i am preparing for this
2nd option is ies ( engineering services , upsc ) , there are some 250 seats , you can clear it if you study sincelerly even in colleges , in 2012 i got air-06
3rd option is psu's through gate as all psu's are now recruting through gate now , ther are 4-5 here , like nptc , iocl , in 2012 i also got slected in ntpc and iocl after my gate rank in 2012 of air-08 and subsequent interviews but did not join
4th option is eil ( engineers india limited ) , but i think they only allow for 2 year exam apperance one passing year and other next year
5th option is client companies in civil engineering where you get college placement , like vedanta , tata power , reliance power etc
and last option is contractor companies in civil engg like lnt ecc ( here i worked for 2 year after college placement ) , dlf , shappoli pallonji etc
and my advice being a civil engg , never join software companies , they will ruin you

again you are going wrong way as i see most students do. there is nothing like gate books , ies books , ias books , i have same set of books means standard text books for civil engg which i have used for every exam i faced , let me tell you , there i have only pasted some exams which i cleared. i worked in lnt ecc where i was placed after college but after 2 years i left job and in 2012 gave gate got air-08 and then got selected in 4 psu,s including ntpc , iocl but did not join , then cleared bpsc asst eng air-01 , there also did not join , then 4-5 more exams all in single digit ranks , then ies in 2012 air-06 , right now going for forestry service with same civil engg and maths but will join ies for now , all with same standard books nothing special for any exam , for gate only extra thing is maths for that also you have to use standard text books and practice questions , that is the best preparation you can give to yourself. if you need the list of books which i use then can give you that list but remember , dont be fooled by as if something extra is needed for any exams which many people claim, everywhere it is same civil engg
