The main purpose of this paper is to look at the various aspects of an emerging field in multidisciplinary engineering bioengineering. It advances fundamental concepts; creates knowledge from themolecular to the organ systems levels; and develops innovative biologics, materials, processes, implants, devices, and informatics approaches for the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of disease, for patient rehabilitation, and for improving health. Bioengineering has helped bridge the gap between biology and engineering.
