The purpose of a hollow-cylinder test is to determine soil properties from a variety of plane
strain stress paths. In the hollow-cylinder apparatus (Figure 10.30a), a hollow, thin-walled cylindrical
sample is enclosed in a pressure chamber and can be subjected to vertical loads or displacements,
radial stresses on the inner and outer cylindrical surfaces, and a torque, as shown in
Figure 10.30b
