IIIT Delhi – College Details

Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology, Delhi (aka. IIIT-Delhi or IIIT-D) was created as a State University by an act of Delhi Government (The IIIT Delhi Act, 2007) empowering it to do research and development and grant degrees. The institute began with its first batch of 60 BTech students in 2008. Since then, it has come a long way with nearly 20 faculties specializing in diverse areas of Computer Science, and nearly 250 students consisting of 3 batches of BTech, 1 batch of MTech and 2 batches of PhD. In a relatively short time, it has earned a good reputation in India and abroad for being a center of quality education and research in IT. AICTE has recongnised us as an Institute of National Importance, along with other IIITs.

Streams at Graduate Level

While Computer Science focuses on the foundations of computing, IT as a discipline focuses on satisfying computing technology needs of organizations. So, in a continuum between principles and application, IT is more towards application, with the goal being to apply knowledge of computing sciences for solving problems. As foundations of IT are in Computer Science, it is feasible to have a CS-based IT program, which will allow a graduate of the program to choose a career in CS or applied aspects of computing. IIIT-Delhi aims to have such a curriculum which is CS-based, and which will develop in students’ skills for problem solving using engineering and research approaches, in the field of IT or some domains of IT.

Some of the salient points of this program are:

  •      As it is an IT focused program, it “inverts the pyramid” and start with computing oriented courses first, and the general and sciences courses later. Besides being better suited for an IT program, it also enables the possibility of students seeing newer applications and possibilities of relating IT with these subjects.
  •      Has a core program that focuses on computing fundamentals as well as communication skills.
  •      After the core program, there is flexibility on the courses the students can choose. The program allows limited specialization in IT streams or non-IT domains.
  •      Humanities and social sciences is an integral part of the curriculum.
  •      Allows motivated students to graduate with a “BTech (Honors)” by doing extra units.
  •      Has a heavy emphasis on practice with many courses having labs and programming assignments as integral part of the course work.
  •      Builds research skills through courses like “independent study”, “independent projects” and “undergraduate research”.

Streams at Post-Graduate Level

IIIT-Delhi subscribes to the view that a Masters degree is primarily industry-focused, though it can be used as a stepping stone for research as well. And the decision whether the degree is to be pursued for skill and knowledge up-gradation or also for building research skills should rest with the student. The Institute also believes that a student should also be given an option of pursuing MTech without assistant ship so he/she can focus full time on the program, and possibly finish the program MTech sooner, as compared to a student who is on Assistant ship and so has to do part-time work in lieu of the assistant ship.

The Institute feels that to address the needs of the industry, which today requires more specialized manpower as each field is getting more complex, it is desirable to provide specializations within Computer Science in the MTech program. For this, the Institute permits a student to do an “MTech in Computer Science” or “MTech in Computer Science with specialization”.

  •   In 2010, IIIT-Delhi started M.Tech. in CS with specialization in Information Security.
  •  In 2011, IIIT-Delhi started M.Tech. in CS with specialization in Data Engineering.
