An all terrain race car designed by "faadoo engineers" from Birsa Instt of Technology, Sindri won the runners up award for being the safest vehicle in all terrain vehicle category. The competition was organized by the BAJA Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) at the national automobile testing centre in Pithmpur near Indore last week.
The "faadoos" who named their car wonders were also given a cash award of Rs 50,000, besides certificates and trophy. This was the first time, the students from one of the premier engineering college in eastern india took part in this competition. They were given a Heros welcome from their colleagues and faculty on their return to college this Thursday.
Team Leader, Rakesh told that out of nearly 200 designs presented before the organizers at India Habitat Centre in New-Delhi, 80 were selected for manufacturing which included the design of the car presented by them. After a technical inspection, only 62 were allowed to participate in the final race of 2.5 hours at Pitampura. Though they could complete 24 laps in the stipulated time, just one lap behind the runners up in the endurance test, the car presented by them got the second prize in safest vehicle category.
Baja SAE India consists of competitions that simulate real-world engineering challenges. Students as a team are tasked to design, build, test, promote and race an off-road vehicle that will survive the severe punishment of rough terrain. The vehicle must be safe, easily transported, easily maintained and fun to drive. The objective of the competition is to provide SAE student members with a challenge that mirrors the steps involved in introducing a new product into the Marketplace.
