Kanpur was a city that existed as an insignificant village founded by king Hindu Singh of Sachendi till the 1st half of the 18th century. Kanpur became a princely state by the time it was captured during the British regime and since then it came to be associated with a number of nicknames where Kahnpur was referred to as Cawnpore because the Britisher's couldn't pronounce Kanpur.
One look at Kanpur and it reminds you of those narrow streets pan stained streets buzzling with activity, and congested as ever, the tinkle of cycle rickshaw bells. Popularly known as `Kanhpur' and spelt as Cawnpore during the British regime, the city is associated with the Indian Mutiny. Kanpur is also home to a number of stalwarts like Shyamlal Gupta `Parshad', composer of the famous patriotic ditty `Vijayee Vishwa Tiranga Pyara' and Balkrishna Sharma `Navin'.

The Jain international school and St. Xavier's School are both prominent schools in Kanpur affiliated to the CBSE and offer education from the LKG to class IX. They are perhaps one of the most well known schools in North Kanpur because their medium of instruction is English. While Mercy Memorial School is affiliated to the ICSE syllabus, Gulmohar Public School is affiliated to the CBSE syllabus and makes a good choice of schools that offer education from nursery to class 12.
