Re: Car designing as a career option

The automobile industry has seen a lot of growth in recent years with great scope for qualified automotive designers in India. The brain behind innovative and attractive designs is the automotive designer.

The main thrust in this area is on design and development of vehicles of all kinds. Automotive designers work in three main areas: product design, development and manufacturing. There are several institutes which offer courses in automobile design, industrial design and transportation design. The aim of these courses is to help students understand and master the design process through training in the areas of graphic expression, creativity techniques, manufacturing techniques as well as consumer practices.

While some institutes may require you to have read the sciences in Class 12 to be eligible for the course, there are others for which this may not be a requirement so long as you have completed Class 12 and qualify through the entrance test. The entrance test includes problem-solving and data analysis questions. You should also understand the basics of the manufacturing process required for the product being designed. The premier institute for industrial/product design is the National Institute of Design at Ahmedabad (www.nid.edu), which offers a four-year graduate diploma course for school leavers. Admission is based on a highly competitive entrance test which is aimed at assessing your creative abilities.

Other institutes include: * DSK-ISD (International School of Design), which offers courses in product design, transportation design and digital design www.dskisd.com * DYP-DC Centre for Automotive Research and Studies, Pune, set up by the DY Patil Group and designer Dilip Chhabria, which offers undergraduate and postgraduate courses in automobile design www.dypdc.com * MIT Institute of Technology, Pune, which offers a four-and-a-half-year course in product and transportation design. www.mitid.edu.in Check out the websites of these institutes and if you have good creative abilities you can apply for admission
