Management Development Institute ( MDI), Gurgaon
The Management Development Institute ( MDI), Gurgaon, believes in pushing the limit. Spread across 40 acres on a lush green campus in the corporate hub of the Millennium City, MDI was born in 1973 so serve as an institute for training managers, carrying out research and providing consultancy services.

The has topped five out of the seven parameters — course curriculum, faculty, placements, industry interaction and infrastructure — in the Mail Today - Indus Learning B- School Survey. And why not? For starters, it has 70 nationally and internationally acclaimed fulltime faculty members with years of experience as both academics and business executives.

Faculty members are also actively engaged in research on a number of subjects closely aligned with their areas of teaching, training and consulting. “ We have collaboration agreements with 48 management institutions in the U. S., Canada and Europe involving exchange of students and faculty, joint programmes, exchange of knowledge and co- designing the future of business education,” says MDI Director Mukul Gupta. Unsurprisingly, a number of international students from as many as 45 global B- Schools spend a part of their study programme at MDI, giving the campus an international feel.

“ We recognise the fact that talent can be sculpted only through a blend of global business awareness and a process of discovery,” says Gupta, who nurtures the vision to turn the institute into a global business school. “ We regularly invite experienced faculty members from some of the topmost business schools and universities as well as leading industry professionals from across the globe,” he says.

    International exchange programme

A S PART of MDI’s international exchange programme, one out of every five students enrolled in its flagship post- graduate programmes in Management and Human Resource Management study abroad every year. Additionally, as many as 40 students — 30 from India and 10 from Europe — are annually admitted for a joint degree prorgamme the institute runs with the prestigious ESCP Europe Business School in Paris. The programme enables students to get an opportunity to complete a part of their studies in Paris.
MDI also has the distinction of being the first Indian B- School to get an AMBA ( Association of MBAs) U. K. accreditation for all its six prgrammes, including the post- graduate programmes in international management, human resource and energy management. It goes to the credit of MDI that the institute has trained more than 71,000 managers in the last 38 years.

The placement record at MDI has been consistent even when the world economy drifted into choppy waters. This year’s placements saw the most reputed organisations spanning almost all sectors of the economy, such as Banking, Financial Services, Consulting, FMCG, Retail, Manufacturing, IT, Telecommunications, Pharmaceuticals and Media, converge on the campus.

The highest domestic annual salary netted by a PGPM graduate this year was ` 20.8 lakh; the highest international salary offered was ` 44.7 lakh. The average salary was ` 14.31 lakh. For PGP- HRM, the highest domestic salary was ` 20.8 lakh and the average was ` 13.87 lakh. For PGP- IM, the batch was placed successfully with an average salary of ` 11.14 lakh and a highest domestic salary of ` 17.88 lakh.

Unsurprisingly, the alumni have only the best things to say about their alma mater. “ My two years at MDI instilled in me the ability to work in a team, appreciate diversity of views, apply time- tested methods and concepts to management problems and learn various frameworks of operations, apart from leadership skills,” says Girish Aivalli, group executive vice- president and country head, Food and AgriBusiness Strategic Advisory and Research Group, Yes Bank Limited. “ Of all the things, I enjoyed the case study method the most as well as working on group projects,” Aivalli adds. No wonder, MDI continues to be a topper across parameters.
